The lyrics of this song were inspired by a story told by American poet, songwriter, and labor rights organizer, Utah Phillips, and chronicle the saga of one Tom Stribner, an early 20th century lumberjack and free press advocate. The lyrics follow Tom, who runs a lumberjack newspaper out of his logging camp, and his conflict with the lumber bosses, who fire Tom when they learn about his muckraking newspaper. The laidback vocal style and mellow soul rock feel of the verse gives way to an uptempo country beat chorus, which climaxes in a very clean, riff-driven guitar solo. Recorded in Portland, OR in late 2022, the tune is the second single off of Lost Ox’s forthcoming album, Tale of the Fool, which will be released by Dutch Records in May 2024.
